Whether it’s a holiday home or a permanent home, cabins in the woods tend to be isolated, lonely places.

Sometimes that’s what you want, what you need – less people, less stress, more nature.

But, other times, nature, the cosmos, and horror authors want less people too.

And just when our hero’s had enough and is ready to quit the place, a blizzard arrives and the real haunting begins.

Gone to See the Riverman – Kristopher Triana

She brings along her sister, and the trip becomes a surreal nightmare, one that digs up Lori’s personal demons, the ones she feels bonds her to Edmund. Soon she will learn The River Man is not quite fact or folklore, and definitely not human, at least not anymore.

Hollow Falls has a gruesome history: twenty years ago this week, a double slaying shut down the resort. The crime was never solved, and now the woods are overrun with murder-obsessed tourists looking to mark the grim anniversary.

It’s clear that there’s something deeply disturbing going on at Hollow Falls. As Tom’s dream trip turns into a nightmare, he and Frankie are faced with a choice: uncover the truth, or get out while they still can.

The Cabin at the End of the World – Paul Tremblay

Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.”

Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: “Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world.”

Dreamcatcher – Stephen King
