13 Gothic Horror Book Recommendations

Haunting beauty and dark secrets

It’s hard to define any story genre, and gothic horror is no exception.

As with most things in life, people bring their own perspectives and ideas and define things in ways that make sense to them.

The original gothic horror stories are generally associated with 19th-century Romanticist literature. Think Dracula and Frankenstein. The tales often focused on morality, philosophy, and religion, and were set in bleak, remote places, because seclusion is perfect for hiding dark family secrets.

Modern gothic horror still uses supernatural elements, such as hauntings, as well as remote locations, inherited estates, and family and community secrets. But the story doesn’t have to be set in the past or even in English societies now.

Gothic horror has the whole world to choose from and, to us, gothic horror now is more about unsettling atmospheres that play on our fear of the unknown.

We hope you enjoy these 13 gothic horror book recommendations.
