Horror Festival Fare

  • Exiled: Crooked Rose Woods, a new immersive outdoor haunted house experience in Bonner Springs, Kansas, opens on 13 September and runs until 2 November 2024. Darren Lynn Bousman says, “This experience will be more than just a bunch of scare actors in a corn maze. It will be a living, breathing thing, and it will be too late when you realize what I mean by that.”
  • If you’re in Chicago between 20 September and 27 October 2024, check out Buffy: The Slayer Experience. “The immersive activation will be a combination of equal parts cocktail bar, restaurant, training ground and haunted house decor, molded into a one-of-a-kind, over-the-top evening. A true celebration of all things Buffy.”
  • Universal Studios Hollywood has shared its ‘final’ Halloween Horror Nights map, although they’re also teasing that there might be another show added in the next 2 weeks.

  • Alien: Earth. Sci-fi horror. Set 30 years before the original Alien movie, tells the story of the emergence of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and the race between corporations to create new android life. FX, release date TBA.

  • Azrael. Supernatural horror. Set in a world in which no one speaks, a devout female-led community hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil deep within the surrounding wilderness, but she has other ideas. Cinema, 27 September 2024.
  • Broken Bird. Gothic horror. Sybil works at an undertaker’s. It’s a lonely job, with few perks. So, she takes solace where she can. Opened London’s FrightFest, wider release date TBA.
  • Children of the Pines. Psychological horror. A college junior visits her estranged parents, but finds out that they’ve developed an unsettling friendship with her high school ex and strange children are living in the house. VOD, 18 October 2024.
  • Creeping Death. Cosmic horror. While trying to enjoy a peaceful Halloween with his mother, Tim’s up-for-anything friends turn up. But, one of their Halloween pranks breaks a sacred tradition kept between humans and otherworldly deities. Screambox, 10 September 2024.
  • Crust. Creature horror. A depressed washed-up child actor who owns and lives in a rundown laundromat. His tears turn a pile of socks into a loving monster named Crust, who protects him and begins to eliminate his enemies. VOD, 13 September 2024.
  • Curse of the Sin Eater. Supernatural horror. A poor construction worker makes a deal with a dying business mogul to inherit his billions. He soon discovers that the deal also means that he has been cursed to inherit the man’s terrifying sins. VOD, 6 September 2024.
  • Down Below. Supernatural horror. On the 20th anniversary of the gruesome Christmas Eve murders, a demonic preacher returns to haunt that same town’s residents. VOD, 1 October 2024.
  • Frankie Freako. Dark fantasy horror. After calling a late-night party hotline that promises out-of-this-world fun, uptight yuppie Conor Sweeney must battle the pint-sized forces of evil unleashed through his phone line, led by the maniacal rock n’ roll goblin Frankie Freako. Limited release, 4 October 2024.
  • The Funeral. Turkish vampire horror. A lonely hearse driver secretly carries the body of a young girl to her family in the east. During the night, he finds the dead girl making strange noises and falls in love with her, but as she awakens from her eternal sleep, so does her appetite. Release date TBA.
  • Hauntology. Supernatural horror. An older sister takes her runaway sibling on a road trip, to share the most chilling tales surrounding their hometown. VOD, 17 September 2024.
  • I’ll Play Mother. Psychological horror. After the death of their birth mother, two young children are placed in the care of prospective adoptive parents, however, it’s not long before the new family begin to question if something more sinister is at play. VOD, 24 September 2024.
  • The Radleys. Vampire comedy horror. The Radleys are an ordinary family who are abstaining vampires. As if being a teenager wasn’t bad enough, bloodthirsty instincts take over the teens of the family, revealing the terrifying truth and opening the door for an extended family member to re-enter and upend The Radleys’ once perfect slice of suburbia.  UK cinemas, 18 October 2024 (US TBA)
  • Y2K. Sci-fi comedy horror. Two high school nobodies crash the last major celebration before the new millennium on New Year’s Eve 1999. The night becomes even crazier than they could have ever dreamed when the clock strikes midnight. Cinemas, 6 December 2024.
